Edition #7 : Belonging – The Hidden Superpower of High-Performing Teams

Why Belonging Matters

Culture does not live in the staff handbook or the office décor. It happens in the moments between people. It’s the tone leaders set when they respond under pressure. It’s how teams handle mistakes, how feedback is given, how success is shared, and who feels safe enough to speak up.

Belonging is not about blending in. It’s about being seen, valued, and safe enough to bring your whole self to the table. When it’s missing, people shrink. They protect themselves, hold back ideas, and contribute the minimum. When it’s strong, the opposite happens. People take smart risks, challenge thinking, and push performance forward.

As Brené Brown says, “True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are, it requires you to be who you are.”

BetterUp research found that employees with a strong sense of belonging deliver a 56% jump in performance, are 50% less likely to leave, and take 75% fewer sick days. That is not a side benefit. It’s the foundation of competitive advantage.

The Leadership Lens

Belonging gets mistaken for sameness. It is not about everyone thinking or acting alike. That is conformity. Belonging means difference is not just allowed, it is valued. Leaders should ask:

  • Who might feel on the edge of this team, and what can I do about it?
  • Do I reward sameness, or do I make difference an asset?
  • Have I created the conditions where people don’t just join the team, they belong to it?

Belonging in Action

Three ways to strengthen belonging this week:

  • Call in the quiet. Notice who hasn’t spoken and invite their perspective.
  • Spot strengths out loud. Tell people what they do uniquely well.
  • Make room for stories. Encourage colleagues to share what shapes them outside of work.

Reflection Prompt

Think back to a time when you didn’t feel you belonged. What happened to your energy, your ideas, your performance? Hold that lens up to your team. What might be happening under the surface?
