Edition #12 – Hope is a Leadership Skill
I shared a post last week on Gallup’s latest global study on organisational culture. It revealed something powerful (and if I am honest it stopped me in my tracks) 56% of followers say the number one thing they want from leaders is hope.
Not vision. Not charisma. Not another strategy slide. Hope.
And this is not about blind optimism. In leadership, hope means creating belief that the future can be better than today and giving people confidence that they can play a part in making it happen.
Why This Matters for Leaders
Hope is not just a nice-to-have. It shapes performance.
1. Clarity in Chaos
Hope provides direction when everything else feels uncertain. It signals that tough times can be navigated and that there is a reason to keep going.
2. Energy Multiplier
Teams take their emotional cue from leaders. A hopeful leader sparks persistence, creativity and effort, even when the pressure is high.
3. Resilience Anchor
Hope stops disengagement from taking root. It gives people the grounding to stay focused and keep moving.
What This Means for You
If you are leading today, your skills must stretch beyond technical know-how and operational delivery. Hope is a skill. It is an essential capability.
- Tell the Story of the Future: People need to see what is possible, not only what is probable.
- Make It Tangible: Hope is only real if there is a way forward. Show the next step.
- Coach for Contribution: Help individuals connect their strengths to the bigger picture. Hope is strongest when people feel they matter.
Reflection Prompt
Pause and reflect: how often are you giving your team hope in your day-to-day leadership? Ask yourself:
- When I speak, do people leave more energised or more depleted?
- Do I highlight progress as much as problems?
- Do I connect today’s effort to tomorrow’s possibility?
Final Word
At first glance of this research, I struggled with the concept of Hope. How do you measure it? But by leaning into the possibilities of what Hope can bring it has become clear that in a world where uncertainty dominates, your ability to create belief in the future may be the most important capability you bring. Without hope, even the best strategy struggles. With hope, teams can achieve far more than they thought possible.
